Yesterday I found out that I was accepted into the NAV Canada Air Traffic Control program, which is a huge deal. An air traffic controller is somewhat of an underground career that you don’t really hear about but is extremely difficult to become. At the end of last summer I went in to do about 4.5 hours of aptitude testing and was successful at that. Then in January I had an interview process that I went through and must have done well in since I was accepted. I will hopefully be moving out to the Vancouver area in about September/October, which is when I hope to start the program. A big thanks goes out to Marcel Mechielsen who recruited me for the job and helped me get through the process. Now its going to be about 7 months of “Intense School” and then about 18 months of on the job training before I get fully certified. It’s going to be tough but it’s an extremely good job at the end.
I got something big in the works, which I will let you know about next week.

This last weekend I was out in Abbotsford for the last camp of the indoor season. Last week I also received my new Super Cross EVO IS from Bill Ryan and was really excited to build it up. So I flew out early on Friday so I could go to No Hype Bike Shop and build up my bike. Chris Sasso really helped me out with everything getting all of my parts in that I need to put it together. My bike came together really well but I am still not finished yet, still have wheels and my new Shimano stuff to go on when it gets here. I just used my old cranks and wheels.
After I got my bike together, Chris, Jesse Horompoly and I went for a good ride in the awesome weather of the lower mainland. We hit up a few skate parks and tore it up a little bit, letting me get adjusted to my new bike. I love it. Its one of the best bikes that I have ever had and I really love the feel of it. No Hype Bikes is now an official Super Cross dealer so if you are on the market for a new ride then you better check out a Super Cross.
Anyway, the camp on Saturday went really well with a pretty good turnout of kids. I rode all day with the group and feel better and better everyday. The one thing I noticed about being off my bike for over a year is how bad of shape I have gotten myself into. I’m really going to try to get into great shape in the next 3 months and make a run for the title at the Canadian Championship; we will see how it goes.
After the camp on Saturday there was a local race that I stuck around for. I ended up racing in the Pro-Am and it was a blast, about 27 riders came out to race. I think that I had more fun that night of racing then I have in a long time. There were some supper fast riders in the group including: Nick Goertzen, Mischa Partridge, Tory Nyhaug, Steve Creighton, and some old schooler’s with Jerry Erickson and Jason Wesson!
It was awesome; I wish we would have races like this in Alberta. Anyway, it was tough just to make the main but I did even though I was the only guy on flat pedals. In the main I had Tory Nyhaug next to me and as usual I was talking a lot of trash that I was going to cut him off out of the gate. Well in true Tory fashion he shut me up by cutting me off right out of the gate and went on to kick all of our Asses. This kid is the real deal and I can’t wait to see where he will be in 5 years. I think I ended up 5th or 6th but I had a great time. I cant even explain how good it feels to be able to race again, now its just time to get fast!
This weekend is still a no go for Morley. I have a few tracks talking but nothing concrete.
I would like to wish my beautiful wife Jenn a happy anniversary. A year ago today we tied the knot in Maui. Too many more years, I love you.
Sorry for the lack of updates, between being sick and midterms it’s been hard for me to catch up. Two weekends ago I was out in Abbotsford doing an all girls BMX/Mountain Bike camp for a group call the Muddbunnies. I did this camp last year and had a great time, totally different atmosphere and a lot of fun. That weekend I also started to ride my bike again and felt pretty good. My back is strong enough to ride now; it’s just a pain thing I have to deal with. I ended up riding all weekend and had a great time but I think I ran myself down to low.
I ended up having to go to the hospital last Monday as my body was not feeling well and doing things it shouldn’t. They basically told me that I had the “Super Bug” and that’s why I was so sick for so long. Went on Antibiotics all week and felt pretty good by last weekend, still wore out though.
Last weekend was the provincial in Morley and it was a pretty good turn out, about 235 riders I think. It was the first race weekend for my Camp Cools team. I had a lot of compliments about the look of our team but I was mostly impressed on how they raced. This is a new thing for me and it’s going to be lots of fun.
I ended up racing as I had done some gates (for the first time in over a year) the weekend before. Nothing like jumping in headfirst. It was great. Patrick Lebel, Garth Hebert, Aaron Lepp and myself made the Elite class. Even though I was strong enough to race, I don’t have much power and I had my doors blown off right out of the gate. But as soon as I got up to speed I felt pretty good and kept up the rest of the way.
It was some pretty exciting racing between Aaron and Scrumptious but Aaron took the win for the day. Even though Aaron is not on the National team and doesn’t train (ha-ha), he can still out race any of the Elites in Canada, maybe has something to do with camps! Now that I am strong enough to ride I am going to make myself strong again and to get to the level that I want to be at. I know I’m not scared of anyone in a turn, bring it on Lepp!!!! Ha-ha. It’s going to be a fun year; I can’t wait to race again.
This weekend I will be out in Abbotsford for a camp on Saturday from 1:00pm to 5:30pm. This will be the last camp I will be holding for the winter season out in Abbotsford and it will be a lot of fun. Camp is open to everyone so I hope to see you out there.
As of right now there will be no more training in Morley. I just can’t swing it anymore, even though I am getting tons of emails about people who want to train now. Another week and still sick, its amazing how long this stuff sticks around for! Last weekend was one of the best training weekends of the winter; I had good numbers at both the Morley and Abbotsford camps. This weekend I am expecting a few more riders out in Morley as the provincial is going to be held out there in 2 weeks. We had allot of fun out in Morley on Saturday as the kids who showed up all had a good amount of skill and wanted to ride. Sunday in Abbotsford was yet another fantastic group. I had over 30 kids who came to the session and these BC kids are hungry. With the Canadian Championships being held in May, I have a feeling that these kids who are coming out on a regular bases are going to take allot of the N1’s. I just wish the Alberta kids would take advantage of the training, oh well!
Last weekend was the Euro World Cup #5 and #6 in Holland. Samantha had a good day on Saturday making the podium with a solid 3rd but did not make the main on Sunday. She is training through these races right now, as her goal is China, so when she gets in her rest she is going to explode. This weekend she is heading out to Spain to check out the Super Cross race, which is a boys only race so she is there to cheer on her training partners. I talked to Bubba last night who was sitting at the airport on his way to Spain as well. He’s feeling better and better and its only going to be a matter of time before his ankle is good enough for him to start getting some wins and much needed UCI points. Don’t count Bubba out of the Olympics just yet. I’m either going to be heading down to his house or he is flying up to mine to get his training on point for the Olympics.
Okay, so most of you know that it was New Zealand who contacted me to be the head coach. These guys are one of the top ranked countries in the world and have some of the best racers right now. Unfortunately I had to turn down the job offer and am going to be staying here in Canada due to my family, school and Camp Cools commitments. It sure is a confidence boast though, having such a great opportunity, its just too bad the CCA doesn’t share the same views as the rest of the BMX World.
This weekend will be the last Saturday training day out in Morley before the big race weekend. Like always it is open to ALL riders and I will have a few extra trainers to help me out as I think we may have a good turnout. The following weekend will be the Morley Provincial and I WILL BE DOING A CAMP on the Saturday after practice. Camp will go from 4:00pm to 7:00pm for a cost of $30 per rider. I will have lots of help so we will be splitting the group into 2 so that all the riders get in some good training.
