Unfortunately today was another rain out and we will try to get the camp finished tomorrow, December 31. For some reason I can’t figure out how to change the internal time zone in my computer so the dates of my posts are not matching up. The date and time zone on my desktop are set for NZ time, however my web browser doesn’t match up. I know my way around my computer pretty well, as I can maintain my website with no issues, so this is getting a bit frustrating for me. Any Mac users out there who think they can help then hit me up! I have been using Mac’s for 6 years now and am pretty confident in my skills, ha-ha, until now anyway.
As most of you know, Bubba Harris is my best friend and I will be his best man at his wedding in April, as he was my best man a few years ago. Over the past few years, I have been packing on some extra pounds due to the fact that my back won’t allow me to ride my bike. I know exactly what to do as far as diet and training but I find that I have no motivation to do my own stuff. So I have enlisted the services of my buddy Paul Caldwell who lives in Texas, USA. Paul has a strong background in training and has his own training facility in Texas where he trains a bunch of superstar football athletes. He’s going to help me get my ‘sexy back’ so I can look good in time for the wedding. I will keep updates about my progress as I’m hoping to drop about 30pds (15kg) by then. Yesterday was the start of the camp down at the Waiuku track, and it was a perfect day. The weather was hot and the kids who showed up were ready to ride, it turned out to be a great day of training. Today however, was not so good. It rained all morning and we have had to postpone day 2 till tomorrow, Tuesday December 30. Check out the Waiuku website in the morning to make sure the camp is a go, make sure to refresh the page to see if it’s a green light or not.
The camp in Rotorua has been rescheduled to the week after the original date, to February 7 & 8. See you there!
Today (Saturday) is the start of the Waiuku camp out on the Sunset Coast. I will be putting on a 2.5–3 hr Coaches Camp for the local coaches and parents starting tonight at 5pm. This clinic will enable you to understand the ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ that will ultimately improve your ability to help your riders. This is Free as part of my role as a High Performance Coach.

Back when I was 12 years old, I was one of the original factory riders in Canada. My sponsor was no other than Bill Ryan at Super Cross back when he just started up his company. Here is a picture of me in my old jersey; it fit a lot better 18 years ago! I remember a few years ago when my sister went to ride for Super Cross and a certain Canadian family was complaining that she stole their ride, hahaha. Funny thing is that I had this jersey before their kid was born. Oh the drama!!!
For all of you in the Western Hemisphere, have a Merry Christmas today, be safe and have fun. Yesterday, we had our first New Zealand X-mass with Tony, Josh, Trent and Holly Woodcock, as well as the McNabb family and a few others thru out the day. It was a great day as we had our first “Hangi” an ancient New Zealand Maori method of cooking food using super heated rocks buried in the ground in a pit oven. The food is cooked up to 5 hours and was absolutely terrific, a great way to spend the day.
Thanks to everyone who made our first Christmas here a great one, it made missing our families not so bad. Hopefully next year we can do it again but with our families here in NZ for Christmas, did I mention we had to put on SPF! Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Just a quick note about camps, I will not be able to do the camp in Rotorua on Jan 31/ Feb 1 as I am teaching a Coaches Camp for the JDS program on this weekend. I will still be doing a camp in Rotorua, however I don’t have a date just yet. Once I reschedule the date I will post it up here, so no worries if you are down that way. We will set something up very soon.
In a few weeks I will be heading down to the South Island to do a couple of camps in the Christchurch area. Kaiapo BMX Club on January 14 and North Avon BMX Club on January 15. Check the “events” tab for more info.

Tonight is Christmas Eve here in Auckland, and it’s the first time where I am not home with my family. It’s a bummer but we are making due, it’s actually nice to be wearing shorts for a change! Since I was born in Austria and my family is a traditional Austrian family, we celebrate Christmas and exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. Before we left Canada, we had Christmas at both Jenn and my parents’ places so we’ve covered X-mas in certain ways. We’re missin’ out on the good Austrian food that my Mom brews up… that is until I found an Austrian restaurant down the street. We got to enjoy a fine Austrian meal, such as schnitzel and the all the works, not quite Moms but it was still great.
Yesterday, we made it down to the beach (finally!) for a portion of the afternoon. It was great to have some time with Jenn and Avrianna and get to enjoy New Zealand. After the beach, we went to check out one of the better Primary Schools here in Glendowie, the community we live in. One of the local dads Andrew Fleming, hooked us up with the school administration for an ‘interview’. This allowed us to jump ahead of the line of people who have to wait over 1year to get in. It’s great to know people in ‘high places’ and as the saying goes; it’s not what you know but who you know! Ha-ha! Thanks again Andrew.
Today, we went to the hospital (for the 3rd time) to finish up our Immigration Medicals. As expected we are all healthy, other than my back which will soon get some much needed attention. The medical people that we have dealt with here have been great! They’re so much better than the crappy ‘medical’ service we were getting in Canada. For the past 2 years, we’ve had no family Dr. and no one would even see our kid, (without hours of waiting in a crowded wait-room) it’s a good thing she’s healthy! The ‘walk-in’ area in the hospital wasn’t packed with people on the floor, and we only waited a max of 15mins all 3 times we were there! After one week here, we already have a female family Dr. for Jenn and Avri and she has already made a few personal phone calls to make sure we are doing ok! This place looks after “their own” for sure!
A few nights ago, I had a good meeting with Phil Anderson and Richard Mclachlan, who are the two guys behind the Junior Development Squad (JDS) program. The JDS program was developed as a ‘breeding ground’ for riders who will move onto the High Performance Team, which I’m the coach for. Basically, there are coaches who’ve chosen certain riders throughout the country who’ve been picked due to their talent and their potential of one day being a top international racer.
I will be assisting with the JDS as much as possible and the first thing that I will be doing is teaching a ‘Coaches Camp’ at the end of January. During this weekend I will be helping out with the coaches, teaching them training techniques that I use, as well as putting together some programs that they can utilize for their own athletes. It’s really exciting for me to help out on so many different levels of coaching here in NZ. I’m finally getting to do what I do best in so many different aspects. It’s what I love and it’s a dream come true.

I got home a little while ago from today’s camp at the Waitakere track. At first I didn’t think that the camp was going to be a go as the weather looked like it was going to be bad, however, it turned out to be a great day-overcast and not too hot. New Zealand is one of the cleanest places I’ve ever been, however there is a huge hole in the ozone layer above us, so it also boasts one of the highest UV indexes in the world. Having said that, the sun is extremely intense so it was good to have the clouds out. Yesterday, we went into a dollar store and I picked up a straw hat that helped keep the sun at bay; but I won’t be winning any fashion awards in the near future…
Today’s turn out was pretty small, as the track doesn’t have the largest rider base. The good thing about today was that half the kids are current New Zealand National Champions, making it a really fun day for me. It’s always great to have skillz out on the track because they respond really well and are fun to coach. These kids showed up to work and did just that all day long, no wonder they’re all so good.
My two trainers were Kurt Pickard, who I’d never seen ride and just heard about, and Trent Woodcocks who I’ve been training for the past year. These two are at a different skill level than most kids and are going to have a long future in this sport. I will be working with both these guys one-on-one for at least the next 4 years, and am really excited to see how far they can go. In my opinion, they will be household names before long!

I’ve had a busy few days organizing all my camps for the next couple of months, as well as all the planning for the HP side of things. Today our team mechanic/right-hand man/team dad, Ryan Hollows, made the trip up from Rotorua. Ryan is one of the best BMX mechanics in the business and today let me know he is on board with us for the next 4 years, building up to the London Olympics in 2012. This is great news as Ryan is one of the main people I rely on when we are out on the road, and makes my life a lot easier. I’m glad that he decided to make another run with this program; we are all lucky to have him.
I also got the chance to have a good chat with Kurt Pickard. Kurt’s one of the top up-and-coming racers here in New Zealand. He is going to help Trent Woodcock and I out with my camps, and is now officially a Camp Cools trainer. He will be helping this weekend in Waitakere for the clinic we are putting on.
