This morning I had my appointment with Dr Geoff Coldlem, he is a leading spinal surgeon here in New Zealand. He said that I’m in really bad shape and that I need an operation and the sooner, the better. His exact words were “you’re a young man with a really big problem”. My two disks between my L4/L5 and L5/S1 are shot and have no fluid left in them. From what he tells me, there are 2 options that will be available to me:
1. Have my S1-L5-L4 fused together. They would go thru my abdominal wall and using a mesh-steal cage, fuse them together.
2. Put in artificial disks that are made out of titanium. This option would be the best one but it has a cost of $40 000. This would allow for best results and is a state of the art surgery out of France.
Since this is a pre-existing condition, here in New Zealand I cannot get medical insurance and I will have to pay for this operation out of my own pocket. So I need everyone to come to my camps and help sponsor my get-well fund!!! ☺
I have another appointment with him in a few weeks to make the final arrangements and to set a date. I am going to set the date for beginning of August as this is right after the World Championships and I will have some downtime with BMX.
On a good note, I have set up quite a few camps over the past two days in Hamilton, Whangarei and New Plymouth. Check the “Events” tab for more details. Tomorrow night I will be at the East City track in Glenn Innes doing a Coaches Camp from 6 to 8.
Yesterday morning Neville McNabb took me out fishing. He has been trying to take me out since I’ve moved here but being so busy, there hasn’t been a chance. We went to the ocean yesterday and caught a bunch of Snapper, I caught 7! Only one was big enough to keep but it was fun never-the-less, thanks buddy. Here are some pictures from yesterday.

This past weekend’s camp in Christchurch has been re-scheduled until this coming up weekend on Feb 27/28. Sorry for this but unfortunately Mother Nature is a great force then all of us. We will go from 5-9 on Friday and 9-4 on Saturday, let me know if you have any questions.
Things have been pretty crazy around here lately but are finally starting to come together. Two weeks ago the Internet service for our community was switching satellites and because of this we had no Internet for a week. Worst part about that is we were still-hunting for a house and could no longer use the computer to check out homes. On top of this, ours shipping container has been stuck in customs for 5 weeks now and I have been stressing out!
With all this going on I had to put together and run a High Performance BMX Camp for BikeNZ this past week. I invited about 15 of the top Jr/Elite here in NZ and put them thru a 3 days camp at the Millennium Sports Institute and North Harbor Track. The camp went off great and I had a fun time with all the athletes that participated, it was good to get to know all of them. There is a ton of talent here in NZ and it will be good to see where they can go with it.
On Friday it all came together for us as we had our Internet hooked back up, found a perfect house and our shipping container was released from customs. We found our house up in Pukekohe, an easy 15-minute bike ride from the new SX track in Puni. We don’t move in till the end of next week but what’s another two weeks.
Yesterday was Jenn and mine anniversary, so baby, Happy Anniversary.

This weekend’s camp in Rotorua is a go!! I will be at the track by 9:30am Saturday morning to start with sign-up’s beginning around 10am.
You will need to bring water and lunch, since it is not provided, however I do provide noted results.
If you are coming to the camp can you please ride in flat pedals, you will learn more throughout the weekend as I push you out of your comfort zone.

Had a good weekend up in Hamilton, the JDS camp went off great and I had a fun time with all the coaches and kids. There is a lot of talent in this group and these are the kids who I will have on my HP team one day, if any of them decide to keep growing to that level. They’re a bunch of skilled riders so I’m excited to see how far they can come in a few years down the road. It’s cool to be involved with the kids when they’re at this level, it helps to establish a coaching relationship and to see them progress. When you see them grow and accomplish goals that they’ve worked so hard achieve, it’s very rewarding as a Coach.
I have been pretty sick over the past week and I barely toughed it out for the weekend, still not feeling great and I actually had to go the hospital yesterday for some special injections. I get what’s called “cluster migraines”, it’s basically like an A-bomb that gets detonated behind your eye, it’s great fun everyone should try one! There is absolutely nothing that I can do when they show up to ‘play’, I become a cripple on the floor. They usually last 2-3 weeks with attacks pretty much daily and only come every 2 years or so, there is nothing I can reference to that has the intensity that these have. The Dr. thinks they may be triggered by the nerve damage in my back but they don’t have any idea really. I need to take several drugs to curve the pain which in turn, really balls-up my day. Nice…
Last Wednesday, after long 8 years, I had an MRI done on my back and finally get to see a specialist for advice on what to do about getting well again. I’m seeing the Dr. on Monday so I am excited to get some answers and find out how I can get my hop back into my step.
This weekend’s camp in Rotorua is up in the air, there aren’t too many kids signed up and if I don’t get more then I won’t make the weekend trip.
