Jenn and Avrianna flew in to be with the team last Thursday from Auckland. On Friday morning she started to feel bad and by the afternoon she was throwing up a couple of times and had a fever of 103 F(40 C). We called the nurses hotline and they told us to give her some children’s Tylenol (panadol) and keep her cool. We did this and thru the night and she got better.
Saturday morning she was feeling better but still didn’t look good. By mid-day she threw up again and her temperature went up to about 100 F(39C), so we did the same thing as we did the night before.
Sunday morning she woke up and was feeling way better, we even went for a couple of walks and she had more energy, all though she still hadn’t eaten anything or drank very much for the past few days. That night I went down to our common room where the team was having dinner and grabbed a few plates of food for Jenn and I. By the time I got back, Avrianna had thrown up and her temperature was at 104 F(41C), her eyes were rolling back into her head and she was delirious. We called the nurses hotline right away and they told us they were sending an ambulance. So we grabbed her and rushed her to the Children’s hospital which was about 5 minutes away.
When we got there she was in bad shape and her temperature was about 106 F (42 C). They could not find out what was wrong with her, and no, it was not Swine Flu, we knew that right away as she was not coughing. We had about 3 Dr.’s and numerous nurses working on her and it was a horrible night, the worst of my life! They were very concerned and Jenn and I were freaking out! They did chest x-rays, blood test and urine test and ruled out everything they could think of. It took 3 nurses and the two of us to hold her down to get an IV into her. I can’t even explain how horrible it felt when she was yelling at Jenn and I to help her.
Since she was in such bad shape they started her on a major antibiotic that they use for meningitis (which she did not have), they called it the ‘bleach of antibiotics’ as it kills everything in the system.
She was admitted and spent the last 2 nights there in quarantine. With the antibiotics kicking in and her becoming hydrated again by IV, she started to feel a lot better. They found she had two common viruses in her, which would be killed off by the antibiotics. She still might have a bacterial infection but the antibiotics she is on will kill it all off, so she will be ok.
She is now back at the hotel and feeling normal again. I didn’t want to tell anyone until it was ok. So it’s all good! Jenn spent the whole time with her at the hospital; I had to leave at night as only 1 parent is allowed to stay. We had AWESOME nurses and Dr.’s except for some bitches last night. We felt like we were in an episode of House as they had all the Dr working on her and ruling out all possibilities.
Since she is fine again I am back to being a coach, which was on hold as DAD is my number 1 job. Thankfully Jenn and Avrianna came over to Australia when they did as if this was going on in New Zealand I would have got a flight back home to NZ. Thanks too Ryan, Sue, Tony T and Alysha for making sure the team was good to go.

We’re 6 days away from show time and our hotel is filling up with French and South American riders. Its cool to have so many friends from so many different countries, only in BMX!

Here is the first sign that I know that I’m turning into a Kiwi… I’m sitting in my hotel room with Avrianna cheering on the All Blacks as they play Australia, its not the NFL but I’ll take it.
We had a good session today out at the Cove even though it was freezing cold and the wind was really bad. The team was looking better today then they have been and if my training is right (which I know it is) then they will feel even better on Tuesday when we ride again. I’m starting to get really excited for the race and wish it was tomorrow, but its not and we still have a few days of training to get thru first.
Lots of New Zealanders showed up to ride the Cove today and the challenge team is looking fast as well. I hung out for their practice giving a few pointers to those who wanted them. It was good to get a chance to see some of the future HP riders out tearing up the track and I got to meet a bunch of Kiwis that I haven’t met before. I’m sure it’s going to take a few years before I know everyone but it’s all good.
Over the past few weeks I’ve done a lot of media in NZ, including few phone interviews. I’ve been on the news a few times and it’s a trip how people are so into their Sport in NZ. Last week Jenn was out and about in town and 3 people stopped her saying that they saw me on the News. I’m officially a celebrity, ha-ha.

Today Jenn and Avrianna arrived from Auckland to come hangout with the team for the rest of the trip, its always great to have the girls around when I am on the road.
Had a good session out at the Cove BMX track this morning with the team, they’re all looking good and were loving the track. The weather has been horrible but it worked in our favor today, sun and gorgeous blue skies. The Cove track is in a cove (go figure!) and the view behind the track is incredible, a little windy at times being on the Ocean but it didn’t affect the riders too much.
I’m giving the team a day off tomorrow as some of them are still a bit tired from the training, nothing a few days off and some ice baths won’t cure. Having seen a few other teams over the past few days it really reminds me of what an awesome crew of people and athletes that I have on my squad. I consider myself very fortunate to be apart of the New Zealand team and can see myself staying in this job for many years to come. With a bit of good luck (which you need at this race) these guys can prove how good they really are next week.
We practice again at the Cove on Saturday morning at 10 am. The HP team has the track rented out until noon when we open it up for the rest of the New Zealand team in the afternoon. I will be hanging around for this practice session for all the kiwis so that I can help with a few last minute details for some of the riders who need it. If you are around you should really take advantage of this.
I know that there was an issue with the jerseys and a lot of people are pointing fingers but just so that everyone knows, the right jerseys were ordered. There was a screw up with the sizes on the Chinese end of things, nothing that BikeNZ or BMXNZ had any control over. Today a big box of kids jerseys showed up at the hotel so the kids will be getting the right size jersey, however, people need to be patient with the process as the VOLUNTEERS are trying their best.

We are in Adelaide, Australia right now doing our final preparations for next weeks World Champs. On this trip we have a team of 12 riders and 4 support staff to help out with our HP team. The weather here has been not-so-good, with rain everyday that we’ve been here. No real change from all the rain we were getting in New Zealand, I guess that’s what you get in the winter months on this side of the world.
The team has been doing great and now that Marc Willers has joined us from his home in California and is setting the tempo in training, the team is firing on all cylinders. Everyone is looking really good right now, still a little tired from all the conditioning they’ve done but with another 10 days of tapering down the team will be peaking at the right time.
Today we had a fun session out at the Cove BMX track, which we rented out for 4 sessions for the HP team. It’s been raining the past few days and was raining quite a bit when we pulled up to the track, however the track was rock solid! Not sure what it’s made out of, but it can handle rain better than any track I have ever been at. The track was fun and technical and the riders really liked it, will be great in a few days when we get back on it with some good weather.
We also started our recovery protocol today with easy rides on our new road bike/trainers that we ordered for the HP team, good job Ryan. The kiwis are starting to look more and more like the HP team we want to be. After our recovery ride we had the riders take ice baths, they didn’t like too much, ha-ha, good times.
Tomorrow we have another sprint session so I hope the weather holds up. It’s not supposed to- again- but we’re trying to make it work. When the rain stops the sprinting begins….

The camp is going great; we have had 3 days of hard training, gates, talks with a nutritionist and other Sports Science personal. The team is looking good and I’m excited to start the second half of the camp in Australia this weekend when we head over for 2 weeks. The weather here has been crap so we haven’t been able to ride the track or do much stuff outside. We have had to resort to doing a sprint session in an underground car park which was kind of fun.
