So my sister Samantha Cools is officially here. This weekend she will be coming with me to Cambridge for the North Island Champs and will also be racing. It’s going to be wicked for all the kids here to meet her and watch her race in person. Sam will be staying here training with our team for the next 6 months. It’s going to be an added bonus as she will also be helping out with my camps so the girls get to ride with one of the best.
Last couple of weekends I have been down to Invercargill, this last time I was doing a Coaches Camp on Friday night and then a camp for the riders on Saturday/Sunday. We had a great turnout with 30 riders who came down from Alexandra and Dunedin to come take part. The weather was cold and a little rainy but for the most part it worked well for us, but I guess that’s what you get down there. Even so, the camp was sweet and we all had a ton of fun. The kids who came out to the camp all improved quite a bit and it’s a really gratifying camp so see so many kids improve by so much. Thanks to Matt Davies for flying down with me and being my trainer for the weekend, you’re the man.
When I returned home from the camp we spent the next day with Marc Willers and did a little planning of what we are doing for his comeback training. We went out for lunch and ate some mussels. Now I don’t know if was because of the food but that night and for the past couple of days I have been violently sick, it’s been brutal. I feel like I have a porcupine sliding thru my intestines. Then to top it off, yesterday I had a disco gram. It’s a procedure where a Dr. injects dye into my discs to see what level of pain it produces as well as an MRI to better show what’s wrong with everything. The Dr told me this will be the most painful procedure I will endure in the process of having my back fixed.
So for the last 24 hours I have been on bed rest and in lala land.
It’s been relaxing and painful at the same time.
I will be headed down to Cambridge tomorrow for the North Island Champs. From what I understand a gym will be booked for Saturday after the race. There will be an open forum for the BMXer’s to have me there to answer any questions that you may have regarding the National Team, JDS, Coaching, Training or any BMX questions you need to know. I had some interesting conversations today with a few people here in New Zealand. It seems that my name has come up as a person who was and is responsible for a certain bike company being changed over to another distributor. Although I am good friends with all the people involved, I have nothing to do with the changing of the guard. I was told information of incoming bikes and posted it on my site and I apologize if people found out about this thru my site. Unfortunately, this bike company did not handle the situation correctly but I sure hope the team stays together as a unit as it’s a great team.
I just want people to be well aware that I am a very unbiased person here in New Zealand and make my own opinions about people thru my own interactions. The people I am friends with in my personal life don’t effect the decisions I make in my coaching life. Some may think that I have favorites when it comes to riders, I couldn’t agree with you more. I favor the fast kids who work hard, have a great attitude and are up in front. Doesn’t matter what jersey they wear, what club they come from or what they eat for morning tea, it’s my job to become aware of the talent that’s in front of me.
Back in Canada I have a CampCools team that I set up a few years ago. Unfortunately with me moving to New Zealand the ideas and plans I had for the team never really saw the light of day. Thankfully I have some great kids and parents on the team and they have kept it going with the help of Team Manager Glen Pratt. This year the team finished 3rd over all in Canada. Great job guys.

I’m hanging out in Invercargill, which is the Southern most city here in New Zealand. This weekend I’m here for a Lead Coaches meeting and also to do a Sports Science workshop with our leading Sport Scientists here in New Zealand. We will be focusing our energy on the SRM cranks and to learn all there is to know about these cranks and the best way to analyze the data. Good times!
Just found out on BMXMania that I have been nominated as Coach of the Year by the UCI! The awards banquet will be held this weekend at the Frejus SX race. It’s the first year the UCI is holding this awards event and I’m pretty pumped that I am 1 of 4 coaches to be nominated in this category. The other coaches are all people I have a lot of respect for and am also friends with. I’m not really concerned if I win or not, just to be selected is an honour for me. It’s really cool that the UCI has recognized me, and to think that it was only 3 years ago that the CCA told me I wasn’t allowed to volunteer to help the Elites as I didn’t have enough experience! Haha! I’m really happy that a great country like New Zealand gave me a chance to do what I do best. This is only the beginning; I’m just warming up as a Coach.
Sarah was nominated in 2 categories, Best Racer and Best Move of the year. Good luck to her; it’s too bad we weren’t in France this weekend to enjoy the good times. I’m sure there will be more to come!
With the beginning of the summer here in New Zealand most people are in need of new bikes. Boss Racing has a great stock of SuperCross frames that he just got in, which is unofficially the bike of the National Team. He is also the new distributer for Redman Bikes here in NZ. I’ve heard from people that it’s been difficult to get these frames, well not anymore! Tony will have a fresh order of frames here in the next few weeks. It’s been nice being home for the past few weeks and getting into a routine and a schedule. Can’t tell you how good it feels to have a routine at home that involves cooking and cleaning! It’s funny the things you take for granted when you’re on the road all the time and the small things you really do miss.
Had a great appointment last week with Dr. Greg Finch who is one of the top spinal surgeons here in New Zealand. Jenn and I have seen many doctors over the past 5 years and we finally feel like we have met the right one to do my back operation. This guy knows his stuff and has had thousands of successful lower lumbar spinal fusions and is willing to work with me on the cost of the operation. Since it’s a pre existing condition here in New Zealand I have to pay for this operation out of my pocket, $45K!!! It seems astronomical but when you compare it to the pain I’m in and what I can’t do, it’s a no brainer! Unfortunately in Canada the medical system sucks and I’m still 18 months away from seeing my first orthopedic surgeon and still about 4 years away from having an operation. Lately I am having to walk around with a cane as it’s gotten so bad, no way I can wait until I’ve made it to the top of the list in Canada.
I go for a disco-gram next week which is a test to see what discs I need removed. He thinks I need two discs taken out between my S1-L5 and L5-L4 but needs to make sure. Once I have this test done I will see him at the end of the month to set a date. I’m hoping to have this done mid December so that I have the Christmas holidays to heal up as I will be out of commission for about a month. Fingers crossed!!
The Super Cross track that we have here in New Zealand (Puni) is starting to really take shape. I’m hopping that it will be done soon so that we can start riding on it, however it’s been a lot of work for a small amount of people. It’s going to be great to have this track in NZ, as there are only about 4 SX tracks that are permanent in the World. This is going to be such a huge advantage for the kiwi riders to have a track like this; being able to prepare for the London 2012 Olympics at home is going to be incredible! I remember when Tony T took me out to the track when I first got to New Zealand and it was just an open field, it’s come along way since then. Here are some arial photos.
